Dr. Gillian Griffiths

Biography

Gillian Griffiths is a prominent researcher known for her significant contributions in cell biology. After obtaining her PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1984, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University and subsequently established her own research laboratory at the Basel Institute of Immunology in Switzerland in 1990. Over the years, she has held influential positions at University College London and the Dunn School of Pathology at Oxford from 1997 to 2007, before becoming the Director at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research from 2012 to 2017. Griffiths has been recognized for her groundbreaking research, particularly in understanding the fundamental mechanisms that drive cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) killing, which has laid the groundwork for the development of targeted cancer immunotherapies. She has received numerous accolades, including election to the Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2005, the European Molecular Biology Organization in 2006, and the Royal Society in 2013, along with the Royal Society Buchanan Medal in 2019 for her research achievements.
