Biography

Gina Leinninger is a Red Cedar Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University, where she serves in the Department of Physiology and is involved with various programs including Neuroscience, Genetics & Genome Sciences, and Cell & Molecular Biology. She is the Graduate Director of the Molecular, Cellular, Integrative Physiology Graduate Program as part of the BioMolecular Science Gateway. Her research focuses on the neurophysiological mechanisms by which neurons in the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) regulate energy balance. The LHA is a crucial brain center for the regulation of feeding, drinking, sleeping, and locomotor behaviors, all of which directly affect weight. Leinninger's lab investigates how the disruption of LHA neurons contributes to the development of obesity and metabolic disease. The lab utilizes innovative mouse models and advanced neuronal tract tracing techniques to examine the roles of specific populations of LHA neurons in responding to metabolic stimuli and regulating motivated behaviors. Her work aims to enhance the understanding of how these neurons influence energy balance and the pathogenesis of obesity.
