Biography

Gina M. Masullo is an Associate Professor at the School of Journalism and Media, Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on how digital spaces connect people, influence society, and impact journalism. She is the author of "Online Incivility and Public Debate: Nasty Talk in the New Town Hall" and co-editor of "Scandal in the Digital Age." Before entering academia, Masullo spent 20 years as a newspaper online reporter and editor, with experience covering crime, courts, prisons, and state and local government. She served as assistant city editor and bureau chief, and near the end of her journalistic career, she wrote and blogged about parenting. Masullo holds a B.A. in communication from Franciscan University of Steubenville and an M.A. and Ph.D. in mass communication from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Prior to her role at UT Austin, she spent years as an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Mass Communication and Journalism. She is affiliated with the grant-funded Center for Media Engagement, working on the Connective Democracy initiative funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which is aimed at developing practical solutions to address societal division. Masullo teaches a variety of undergraduate courses including Gender and News and Online Incivility in Public Debate, as well as graduate courses such as Fundamentals of Statistics.
