Biography

Prof. Giovanna Fossati is a Professor and Director of Research at Utrecht University, in the Department of Media and Culture. She has served as Chief Curator at the Eye Filmmuseum from 2009 to 2024 and was the Director of Collection & Knowledge Sharing from 2023 to 2024. Previously, she held the position of Professor Chair in Film Heritage and Digital Film Culture at the University of Amsterdam from 2013 to 2024. Since the inception of the MA Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image program in 2003, she has been actively involved in film restoration and digitization. Her research emphasizes the development of sustainable approaches to film preservation globally and coordinates an inter-institutional research group on Moving Images, which focuses on preservation, curation, and exhibition. Fossati has played a key role in various conferences concerning audiovisual archiving and has contributed significantly to the field of film preservation, gaining recognition that led to her invitation to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2022. She is also the author of several publications on film and media heritage, including works on the archival life of film and silent cinema.
