Biography

Giovanni van Empel is an Economist and Physician, currently serving as a Research Fellow in the Department of Health Economics, Wellbeing, Society at the Australian National University. His research is focused on an ARC-funded project that investigates the impact of counter-COVID policies on children's developmental outcomes and mental health. Giovanni holds a PhD in Economics (Health) from Monash Business School, Monash University, as well as an MSc with Distinction from the Department of Economics at the University of York, UK. He has also undergone medical training at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Indonesia. His primary research interests lie at the intersection of health economics and labour economics, concentrating on organizational features of healthcare systems, hospital competition, and peer influence within healthcare delivery. Additionally, he is involved in development economics and is co-principal investigator on a field experiment examining vaccine hesitancy.
