Dr. Girish Chowdhary

Biography

Girish Chowdhary is an associate professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he directs the Distributed Autonomous Systems Laboratory (DASLAB). His research focuses on creating highly autonomous mobile robots capable of operating in harsh and uncertain outdoor environments, with interdisciplinary applications in agriculture, defense, and remote area exploration. Through his laboratory, students engage in cutting-edge research at the intersection of machine learning, robot perception, autonomous control, decision theory, and multi-agent coordination. Dr. Chowdhary has extensive experience in adaptive control, fault-tolerant control, and LIDAR-based perception for unmanned aerial systems. He earned his Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology and has previously worked as a research engineer at the German Aerospace Center. His contributions include developing over 15 research platforms for unmanned aerial vehicles, and he has held various positions that leverage his expertise in autonomy and robotics.
