Biography

Gisèle Baxter is a Sessional Lecturer in the Department of English Language and Literatures at the University of British Columbia. Her teaching and research interests encompass a diverse array of themes within literary and cultural studies from the 19th to the 21st century. This includes Gothic studies, Victorian literature, science and speculative fiction, as well as dystopian and post-apocalyptic narratives. In addition, she has a focused interest in children's literature and Modernism, particularly in the British and Irish contexts. Her scholarship includes publications and conference papers exploring themes in the works of authors such as Anita Brookner and D.H. Lawrence, alongside analyses of Spanish Civil War literature and contributions to edited collections. Recent papers, published between 2018 and 2021, have investigated how gender dynamics are portrayed in synthetic human representations in contemporary science fiction films, notably in titles like Blade Runner 2049 and Ex Machina. Gisèle has also co-edited significant literary works, contributing important chapters that engage with themes of the Gothic heroine in contemporary narratives.
