Biography

A/Prof Giselle Yeo heads the Stem Cell Biotechnology Lab based at the Charles Perkins Centre. Her group's research focuses on understanding extracellular matrix-modulated stem cell biology and developing stem cell-instructive regenerative materials. A/Prof Yeo completed her PhD in matrix protein biochemistry at the University of Sydney and continued her postdoctoral studies in biofunctionalization materials for tissue engineering applications. In 2018, she was appointed as a USyd Early Career Development Fellow to establish a stem cell program. A/Prof Yeo has won over 20 early-career academic research awards, including the 2023 NSW Young Tall Poppy Science Award. She serves as the site director for the Amgen Biotech Experience program in Australia, aiming to increase biotechnology knowledge and skills in schools. Her research area includes stem cell biotechnology with objectives to characterize processes regulating stem cell behavior and develop technologies for effective stem cell manipulation to address the barrier of clinical translation in stem cell therapies. A/Prof Yeo's research aligns with the Faculty of Science's research strengths in Molecules and Materials, Understanding Life and Earth, Health and Wellbeing across the Lifespan, Preventing and Treating Diseases and Disorders, Sustainability, and Generation of Novel Materials. She is actively recruiting talented and motivated PhD and Honours students to join her research group.
