Biography

Giulia Fanti is an Associate Professor and Co-director at CyLab-Africa, specializing in the intersection of technology and societal needs. She completed her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2015, following her Master's degree in the same field in 2012. Fanti's academic endeavors are directed towards the exploration of digital public infrastructure, focusing on the impact of innovative technologies on financial inclusion and regulatory frameworks in Africa. She has made significant contributions to studies assessing water consumption in data centers influenced by artificial intelligence in Africa, and she actively engages in projects that aim to enhance technical capacities in digital identity through initiatives like the Upanzi Network. Her research has garnered attention, showcased at conferences such as SOUPS, and she has collaborated on public articles addressing governmental regulation of emerging technologies. Fanti is noted for her commitment to fostering a new generation of thought leaders in digital identity and technology governance based on her grounded understanding of the field.
