Giulia Ferretto has a passion for marine environments, which began in childhood when she became a SCUBA diver at a young age. She completed her Master’s in Marine Biology in Italy before gaining experience in Norway and Mexico, ultimately moving to Australia to pursue her PhD. Her doctoral research at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) focused on solutions for restoring and protecting the threatened seagrass species Posidonia australis. Currently, as a postdoctoral researcher, she is investigating methods for scaling seagrass restoration in coastal waters near Perth and Shark Bay, WA. Her research involves the use of seagrass transplants, seeds, and naturally-detached fragments for restoration efforts. She is also involved in citizen science projects such as Operation Posidonia and Seeds Snapper, which aim to restore declining seagrass meadows. Giulia is committed to science communication and raising awareness of the ecological importance of seagrasses, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals for education and environmental sustainability.
