Dr. Gizeh Perez Tenorio

Biography

Gizeh Perez-Tenorio is a Principal Research Engineer and Docent at Linköping University, primarily involved in breast cancer research. His work has revealed that over 70% of breast cancer tumors express the estrogen receptor (ER), and hormonal therapy is shown to be effective in reducing mortality rates in these patients. However, he also notes the significant risk of late recurrence for patients who have undergone hormonal therapy, prompting his research focus on investigating the molecular mechanisms that contribute to these late recurrences. Furthermore, he aims to identify high-risk patients and propose alternative treatment strategies for recurrent disease. His specific research interests include evaluating the prevalence and significance of PIK3CA mutations in disease progression and treatment response, as well as assessing the prognostic and therapeutic significance of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) by visualizing and quantifying specific subpopulations in tumor tissue. He also studies the interplay between ER, tamoxifen treatment, and mechanisms related to 'tumor dormancy' in ER+ breast cancer. Besides his research, he serves as a project manager for the Commissioned Education Office at the Faculty of Medicine, where he develops projects aimed at upskilling professionals and enhancing lifelong learning initiatives.
