Biography

Gloria Choi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and went on to earn her Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology, where she studied under David Anderson. Following her doctoral studies, Choi completed postdoctoral research at Columbia University in the laboratory of Richard Axel. Her research laboratory focuses on how sensory stimuli drive behavioral responses and how these responses depend on past experiences. Choi is particularly interested in understanding the neural circuits involved in sensory processes, using olfaction as a model to address central problems in behavior and cognition. Her work investigates how learning transforms neural circuits and how neuromodulators shape and modify responses, allowing for context-dependent behavioral adaptations in response to sensory stimuli. Through her research, she aims to elucidate the mechanisms underlying learning and sensory modalities, exploring how neutral olfactory stimuli can lead to specific behavioral responses. Professor Choi teaches Experimental Molecular Neurobiology and is currently on sabbatical in spring 2023.
