Biography

Gonzalo Velasco Berenguer is a historian specializing in global medieval and early modern history, with a particular focus on political, religious, social, and racial processes within the context of the Spanish Monarchy. He seeks to understand how legislation devised by the king's government impacted the everyday lived experiences of Spanish subjects in colonial settings. His current research investigates patterns of family formation and racial categorizations in the early modern Spanish Philippines, addressing the historiographical narrative regarding ethnic classifications used in Spanish America. He approaches this through the exploration of marriage records, wills, taxation lists, and reports on limpieza de sangre (cleanliness of blood) to understand the expectations of colonial legislators. His past research included examining the joint reign of Philip and Mary in England and its role within the Spanish Monarchy. Velasco Berenguer has published his findings in respected journals such as the Sixteenth Century Journal and English Historical Review, as well as authoring a monograph titled 'Habsburg England: Politics, Religion, Society Reign Philip (1554-1558)'. He has taught a variety of courses in early modern history, encompassing diverse topics and periods.
