Gonzalo Rubio is an Assyriologist whose research focuses on Sumerian and Akkadian languages and the civilization of Ancient Mesopotamia. His publications address topics including Sumerian grammar and literature, early Semitic languages, comparative Semitics, the cuneiform writing system, Mesopotamian history, and various aspects of Ancient Near Eastern cultures, particularly in Anatolia, Mesopotamia, and Iran. He was awarded a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities in the 2012-13 academic year for a project on Early Dynastic literary and ritual texts from Ebla, Mesopotamia. In 2015, he delivered the prestigious Rostovtzeff Lecture Series at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW) at New York University, discussing ‘Sumer in the Mesopotamian World’, and later published a book based on these lectures with Princeton University Press. Currently, he is co-editing collective volumes on Mesopotamian culture, economy, and society for publication by De Gruyter. At Penn State, Rubio teaches courses on Ancient Near Eastern languages (Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite), history, cultures, religions, and literatures of the Ancient Mediterranean, as well as comparative seminars on early writing systems, ancient law, economy, and early state formation, rooted in the history of language.
