Biography

Gonzalo X. Ruiz is an acclaimed soloist in historical performance, specializing in the Baroque oboe. He has collaborated with esteemed musicians including cellist Joanna Blendulf and harpsichordist Katherine Shao as part of the ensemble Francois LaRiche. Influenced by composers such as Purcell, Handel, Telemann, Bach, and Vivaldi, Ruiz is dedicated to reviving and preserving the legacy of the oboe during its 18th Century Golden Age. He has performed widely across the U.S. and Europe, working with notable conductors like Christopher Hogwood and Jordi Savall. His contributions to music include numerous recordings and performances as a principal oboist, including with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic and the New Century Chamber Orchestra. Ruiz is a prizewinner of the Brugges Early Music Competition in Belgium and has taught at the Oberlin Conservatory and the Longy School. He has also conducted master classes at Indiana University and is recognized as an expert in historical reed-making techniques, with works displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Active in the contemporary music scene, Ruiz received the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming in 2000.
