Biography

Goodwin Liu is an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court, having been appointed in 2011 and retained in 2014 and 2022. He previously served as a Professor of Law and Associate Dean at UC Berkeley School of Law, and continues to teach constitutional law as a visiting professor at Harvard Law School, Columbia Law School, and Stanford Law School. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the American Law Institute, and the American Philosophical Society. Liu was elected Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2023 and has served on several prestigious boards including the James Irvine Foundation and the California Commission on Access to Justice. Liu has a strong background in education law, state and local government, and diversity in the legal profession. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Stanford University and Oxford University, respectively, and a J.D. from Yale Law School. His career includes clerking for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and working in litigation at O'Melveny & Myers.
