Biography

Gopika Solanki is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Carleton University. Her interdisciplinary research engages with Political Science, Legal Anthropology, Women's Studies, and Law. She explores themes of gender politics, state-society relations, cultural pluralism, legal pluralism, ethnicity, religion politics, and governance, with a particular focus on South Asian contexts. Solanki is the author of 'Adjudication Religious Family Laws: Cultural Accommodation, Legal Pluralism, Gender Equality in India' published by Cambridge University Press in 2011, and has contributed significantly to the study of domestic violence in the Indian context. Recently, she received a SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant for a project titled 'Counting Adivasi Women Leaders,' aimed at understanding the impact of electoral quotas on ecological governance in Maharashtra, India. Additionally, Solanki has served as an international legal expert on religious laws for the Deputy Prime Minister's Office in Cambodia. She is currently working on a book project on indigeneity and law in Western India.
