Biography

Göran Bergström is a Professor and Chief Physician at the Institute of Medicine, University of Gothenburg. He leads the Physiology Group at the Wallenberg Laboratory and serves as a senior consultant in clinical physiology at the Vascular Diagnostic Unit of Sahlgrenska University Hospital. His primary research interests focus on cardiopulmonary diseases, particularly the role of atherosclerosis and chronic conditions affecting metabolic health. He is the chair of the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS), which aims to recruit and extensively phenotype 30,000 subjects aged 50 to 64 years across six Swedish university hospitals. This study seeks to enhance understanding of cardiovascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease through state-of-the-art imaging technologies and large-scale omics and epidemiological analyses. He has contributed to numerous major population biobank studies and has published extensively on atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular health. His work informs current methods of prevention and treatment for cardiopulmonary diseases, addressing the outdated methods that fail to consider recent shifts in risk factor patterns that influence these diseases.
