Generate a tailored SOP for Dr. Gordon Chua. Improve your application with a focused, well-structured draft.
Gordon Chua is a Professor at the University of Calgary. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Cell Biology from the University of British Columbia, a Master’s in the same field, and a Doctorate in Genetics from Queen's University. His research primarily focuses on decoding transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulatory networks in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Chua’s laboratory investigates the mechanisms controlling gene expression, particularly at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels, and how these processes are implicated in various complex diseases. Current projects in his lab include identifying signaling pathways and transcription factors that regulate gene expression and characterizing the function of Pumilio family proteins. In addition to basic research, Chua's lab is exploring algal-based bioremediation strategies for treating oil sands process-affected water, with a focus on understanding algal species and their potential for degrading toxic compounds. He collaborates with organizations including Suncor Energy and Canada's Oil Sands Innovation Alliance to advance this research.
