Biography

Gordon Fitzell is a Canadian composer, improviser, and sound artist who began teaching at the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba in 2004. He served as Associate Dean from 2013 to 2016. His teaching primarily focuses on music composition at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Fitzell is the founder and director of the eXperimental Improv Ensemble (XIE), an interdisciplinary multimedia performance group, and he is the artistic co-director of GroundSwell, a new music organization in Winnipeg that facilitates concert series and outreach activities for emerging composers. His music is noted for its eerie and throbbing trance-like qualities, exploring the intersections of classical and popular elements within culture and freely inhabiting acoustic, electroacoustic, and interdisciplinary performance environments. Fitzell has collaborated with numerous international artists and ensembles, contributing to multiple Grammy-winning and award-nominated recordings. He has conducted and performed at prominent festivals around the world and continues to produce multimedia installations and sound recordings. His ongoing creative work includes several published articles and conference presentations about his music in Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
