Gordon Fitzell is a Canadian composer, improviser, and sound artist. He began teaching at the Desautels Faculty of Music in 2004 and served as Associate Dean from 2013 to 2016. His teaching primarily focuses on music composition at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Fitzell is the founder and director of the eXperimental Improv Ensemble (XIE), an interdisciplinary multimedia performance group. Featuring music described as 'eerie, throbbing, trancelike', Fitzell explores intersections between classical and popular elements, working with a variety of international artists and groups. He has received multiple awards and recognitions, including the 2010 Rh Award for Creative Works and induction into the College of the Royal Society of Canada in 2018. Additionally, he has published articles and presented papers on contemporary music in several international contexts.
