Dr. Gordon Henry

Biography

Gordon Henry is an enrolled member of the White Earth Anishinaabe Nation in Minnesota. He is the inaugural Audrey and John Leslie Endowed Chair in North American Indian and Indigenous Literary Studies and a Professor in the Department of English at Michigan State University. Gordon teaches American Indian Literature, Creative Writing, and the Integrative Arts and Humanities. He serves as the Senior Editor of the American Indian Studies Series at Michigan State University Press and has published extensively in poetry, fiction, and critical writing. His notable works include the American Book Award-winning novel "Light People" and the mixed-genre collection "Failure Charms." Gordon has also co-edited volumes focused on American Indian literature and has contributed to various anthologies and journals. His teaching and research highlight his commitment to Indigenous literature and storytelling, particularly through initiatives like the Native American Youth Film Institute and community-based digital storytelling projects. In addition to his academic role, Gordon has been involved in strategic planning for the Center for Anishinaabe Languages, Literature, and Storytelling at MSU, further demonstrating his dedication to Indigenous language programs and activities.
