Biography

Gordon Inglis is a Principal Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, specializing in climate–biogeochemistry interactions. He focuses on past and present environments through the geochemical analysis of biomarkers, known as 'molecular fossils'. These biomarkers are organic compounds derived from biological sources that are preserved in the sedimentary record over millions of years. His research involves applying biomarker approaches to reconstruct climate and environmental changes throughout Earth's history. He brings together multidisciplinary expertise, collaborating with environmental scientists, climatologists, ecologists, and Earth system modellers. His primary research investigates past climate states, known as paleoclimates, and their variability, providing evidence of climate processes across different CO2 concentrations. Funded by a Royal Society Fellowship, he leads the DETECT project, which studies the destabilization of the terrestrial biosphere in warm climates.
