Gordon McCord has an extensive background in sustainable development, working at the intersection of environmental economics and public health economic development. His research employs spatial data analysis and satellite remote sensing on topics such as sustainable land use, the burden of changing climate on infectious diseases, and child nutrition. He also explores the health economic impacts of agricultural technology diffusion. In public health, his research includes ecology-based models to estimate infectious disease burdens in populations lacking sufficient data collection mechanisms, as well as vector-borne disease early warning systems and financial modeling for primary health care systems. McCord directs the SDG Policy Initiative, which utilizes the Sustainable Development Goals framework to support policymakers in developing data-driven, evidence-based solutions for a sustainable future. He serves as an associate dean for Student Affairs and an associate teaching professor of economics at the School of Global Policy and Strategy, where he teaches courses including Microeconomics for Policy Management and GIS & Spatial Data Analysis. Additionally, he is a research affiliate at UC San Diego’s Policy Design and Evaluation Laboratory and a faculty affiliate at the Center for Global Effective Action. He has also been invited as a researcher at the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) North America.
