Biography

Gordon Wang received a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature and a Bachelor of Science in Genetics from the University of California, Davis, in 2000. He earned his PhD in 2005 from the University of California, Berkeley, under Dr. Mu-ming Poo, focusing on the role of ion channels in mediating neuronal growth cone guidance decisions. Following his doctoral studies, he undertook postdoctoral training in the lab of Dr. Stephen Smith at Stanford University, where he developed computational architecture for studying molecular diversity at synapses, along with investigating the roles of synaptic diversity in neurodevelopmental diseases, including fragile X syndrome. Furthermore, while co-postdoc in Dr. Philippe Mourrain's lab, he studied dynamic plasticity of synapses related to sleep and circadian cycles in larval zebrafish using multi-photon microscopy. His research lab emphasizes the development of imaging tools to deeply analyze proteins, mRNA, and lipids at synapses, aiming to understand how synaptic heterogeneity affects neural circuits throughout development, aging, and disease states, specifically autism and fragile X syndrome.
