Dr. Gordon Yip

Biography

Gordon Yip is a Lecturer in the Department of Physics at King's College London. His main research interest lies in understanding the nature of remote exoplanets, particularly in developing new approaches to interpret spectroscopic data from space-based and ground-based telescopes, including the James Webb Space Telescope and the Ariel mission. Yip serves as the Machine Learning Lead Coordinator for the Machine Learning Working Group under the European Space Agency's Ariel Space Mission, where he is heavily involved in mission preparation activities. He completed his BSc and MSci in Astrophysics at University College London, followed by a PhD in Data Intensive Science (Astrophysics), supervised by Professors Ingo Waldmann and Giovanna Tinetti. His doctoral studies were complemented by a postdoctoral role as a Research Associate in the Exoplanet Group at UCL and a senior research fellow and associate lecturer in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCL. Yip is passionate about engaging the broader community, serving as the Principal Investigator of the Ariel Data Challenge, a data competition that invites the global data science community to submit solutions to problems encountered in exoplanet research. He is particularly interested in inspiring enthusiasm for AI in planetary science and hosting hackathons at the intersection of AI and planetary science in Europe.
