Dr. Gottfried Hagen

Biography

Gottfried Hagen is a professor specializing in Turkish Studies at the University of Michigan. He offers a wide range of courses covering Turkish, Ottoman, and Islamicate culture, history, literature, and language. His research focuses on the construction of the Ottoman cultural world, exploring themes such as space, time, and self in the context of premodern Ottoman culture. His scholarly work includes publications on geographical literature, historiography, and the political thought of the Ottoman Empire. Hagen is the author of a monograph on the Ottoman polymath Kātib Çelebi and has co-edited significant texts on Ottoman cosmography. He is currently working on a monograph concerning Ottoman Islamic religiosity centered on the Prophet Muhammad. Additionally, Hagen serves as the director of the Center for Armenian Studies from 2022 to 2025, further emphasizing his dedication to exploring cultural and intellectual histories of the Ottoman Empire.
