Biography

Grace Barcheck joined the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University as an assistant professor in 2023. Grace’s work focuses on understanding deformation in geologic materials, particularly the frictional sliding of base ice streams, glaciers, and ice sheets, as well as tectonic faults that host earthquakes. Her research has significant implications for understanding major Earth hazards, including sea-level rise resulting from accelerated glacier motion due to global warming and earthquake risks. She earned her Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2018, and received a B.A. in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Washington University in St. Louis in 2010. Barcheck employs seismology, geophysics, and machine learning to observe and understand the processes contributing to sliding deformation across diverse Earth systems, particularly in polar ice sheets and deep fault zones. Her current projects involve analyzing icequakes in the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets to better understand the controls on ice sheet sliding, characterizing megathrust seismicity in Kodiak Island, AK, and using machine learning to enhance marine earthquake detection in offshore subduction zones.
