Dr. Grace Prakalapakorn

Biography

Grace Prakalapakorn, MD, MPH, is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics at Duke University. She specializes in pediatric ophthalmology and is a clinician-scientist with a focus on retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a leading cause of preventable blindness in children. She has significant expertise in improving access and care outcomes for underserved communities, particularly in the context of ROP screening and treatment. Dr. Prakalapakorn's research emphasizes innovative strategies to enhance ROP screening and address workforce limitations in this area. Her work has led to advancements in telemedicine applications for ROP assessment and has shaped guidelines for comprehensive eye examinations in patients with infantile Pompe disease. She completed her undergraduate education at Duke University, earning a B.S.E. in Biomedical Electrical Engineering, followed by a combined MD/MPH at Emory University, where she was a Woodruff Scholar. Dr. Prakalapakorn has been recognized as an expert in public health and pediatric ophthalmology, serving as a consultant with the CDC on Zika virus-related ophthalmology issues and participating in NIH studies in Liberia.
