Dr. Graciela Metternicht

Biography

Graciela Metternicht is an esteemed academic in the field of Environmental Geography, serving as an Adjunct Professor at the University of New South Wales in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences. Her primary research interests include environmental geography with a focus on the application of geospatial technologies to environmental management and policy. She has extensively contributed to sustainable land management practices, exploring critical issues such as land degradation, ecosystem services, and solid waste management policies. Before joining UNSW, she held significant positions including Regional Coordinator for the Early Warning Assessment at the United Nations Environment Programme in Latin America and the Caribbean. Graciela has also served as Head of Discipline for Geospatial Systems in Environmental Management at the University of South Australia and Professor of Spatial Sciences at Curtin University. Her work has led to substantial advancements in the field, securing multiple grants from the Australian Research Council and collaborating with international agencies. Graciela is recognized for her leadership in remote sensing and GIS applications in solving environmental problems. Moreover, she has developed international professional standing and has been invited for guest professorships and editorial memberships in various prestigious journals.
