Biography

Dr. Mathews's research investigates the use of waste products as construction materials, focusing primarily on reclaimed waste-to-energy aggregates, foamed glass aggregates, and flat panel display glass. He has a keen interest in cementitious products such as cast-in-place concrete, masonry blocks, and precast applications. Dr. Mathews is a licensed professional engineer with a background in structural design and materials. He currently serves on the ASTM C09 committee for concrete and concrete aggregates since 2017 and on the ASCE SEI Sustainability and Disaster Resilience Committee since 2021. Joining Penn State Harrisburg in August 2015, Dr. Mathews was previously a research assistant at the University of South Carolina and has experience working with Ferrell Engineering, Inc. from 2008 to 2011, where he designed steel connections for high-rise buildings.
