Graeme Davison was born in Melbourne and educated at the universities of Melbourne and Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, as well as the Australian National University. He taught at the University of Melbourne and was a Professor of History at Monash University from 1982 until 2005. He has held visiting appointments at Harvard, Edinburgh, ANU, Tübingen, and King’s College, London. Davison is the author of several notable books, including 'The Rise and Fall of Marvellous Melbourne' (1978, 2004), 'The Unforgiving Minute: Australia Learned to Tell Time' (1994), 'The Use and Abuse of Australian History' (2000), 'Car Wars: How the Car Won Hearts and Conquered Cities' (2004), and 'Monash Unlimited: The Monash Story' (2012, with Kate Murphy). He served as a co-editor of the 'Oxford Companion to Australian History'. His recent publications include 'Lost Relations: Fortunes of Family in Australia’s Golden Age' (2015), 'Trendyville: The Battle for Australia’s Inner Cities' (2015, with Renate Howe and David Nichols), and 'City Dreamers: Urban Imagination in Australia' (2016). Davison has been the President of the Australian Historical Association and the Chairman of the Heritage Council of Victoria. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academies of Social Sciences and Humanities and has been a prominent advisor and commentator on museums, heritage, and urban policy. In 2011, he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia.
