Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Graeme Gilling studied piano under Iola Shelley, one of New Zealand's foremost pianists, at the University of Canterbury, where he completed a Bachelor of Music with Honours in Composition. In 1983, he moved to Western Australia to pursue postgraduate studies in collaborative piano under Professor Roger Smalley at the University of Western Australia, completing his Master’s Degree in 1985. Since then, Graeme has cultivated a diverse career as a freelance soloist, recitalist, and teacher, collaborating with the WA Opera, WA Arts Orchestra, and WA Ballet, as well as distinguished international artists. He has had significant contributions in various ensembles, including the Darlington Ensemble, and has performed across Asia. His involvement with the WA Symphony Orchestra as a pianist for the Chamber Music Series and New Music Ensemble has been notable. Moreover, Graeme has been deeply entrenched in teaching, becoming an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board since 1986 and holding multiple significant positions, including Head of Keyboard Studies at the University of Western Australia and Co-Chair of the Australasian Piano Pedagogy Conference. His current research focuses on performance activities, maintaining commitments to collaborative work in vocal and chamber music as well as teaching.
