He completed postdoctoral training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Since joining Simon Fraser University (SFU) in the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2021, he has served as a Principal Investigator at the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation at St. Paul’s Hospital. His research focuses on the role of regular exercise in reducing the risk of developing several health conditions, including cancer and heart-lung diseases. Koelwyn's work aims to understand the mechanisms by which exercise enhances individuals' resilience against disease onset and progression, utilizing a translational ‘omics-based research framework. This includes exploring the inflammatory-immune axis and its modulation through exercise to improve outcomes for those at risk of cancer and cardiopulmonary diseases. He is actively engaged in mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in this field.
