Graham Forbes completed a BA in Biogeography from York University and received his Master’s degree and PhD from the University of Waterloo. Hired in 1993 by the University of New Brunswick (UNB), he coordinates the Greater Fundy Ecosystem Project, employing a multi-agency research approach to sustainable landscape management, with a focus on forest management and the maintenance of native biodiversity. This work resulted in guidelines that have been used as benchmarks by the Department of Natural Resources. In 1997, Graham became the Director of the New Brunswick Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at the Sir James Dunn Wildlife Research Centre at UNB. He has established himself as a leader in science conservation, earning the UNB Merit Award for exceptional contributions to teaching and research, as well as the NSERC Canada Council Synergy Award for Cooperative Research between Industry and University. Forbes has a prolific publication record and mentors notable graduate students, using his expertise to advise national and provincial governments on a range of conservation issues. His research focuses on acquiring scientific information for resource managers to maintain wildlife biodiversity, particularly concerning mammals, birds, and herpetofauna. He collaborates with management agencies like Parks Canada and provincial departments of natural resources, as well as the industry. Currently, he is appointed as the Co-Chair of the Terrestrial Mammal Sub-Committee of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. In addition to his academic role, Graham volunteers as the President of the Harvest Jazz Music Festival and the Fredericton Nature Club, promoting environmental education within the community by regularly giving talks and leading outings for groups such as the Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, and school classes. He was nominated for the Alumni Achievement Award in 2014.
