Professor McClelland spent 30 years working in the R&D pharmaceutical industry, having held senior international leadership positions in clinical research at Beecham (now part of GlaxoSmithKline) and Roche. A qualified biologist, psychologist, and pharmacologist, he obtained his PhD in clinical psychopharmacology through part-time study at Hatfield Polytechnic. In 1999, he initiated a part-time MSc course in Clinical Pharmacology at the Postgraduate Medical School of the University of Surrey, where he later became a Visiting Professor and Course Director in 2009. After leaving his position as Head of UK Clinical Research at Roche in 2009, he moved to Egypt and formed a public company, Luxor Developments, while carrying out teaching and consultancy work in the region. In 2011, he was appointed Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Alexandria. Upon returning to the UK in 2015, he was appointed Non-Executive Director and later Chair of the Clinical Quality Assurance Committee at Quantum Care, a leading UK not-for-profit organization that provides residential care for the elderly. Professor McClelland has published over 60 book chapters and research articles and holds patents, having spoken at and chaired conferences worldwide. He serves as a member of various advisory bodies, including ABPI and the Department of Health. His research focuses on the development of new medicines, patient engagement, and corporate social responsibility within the pharmaceutical industry.
