Biography

Graham Shields received his PhD in radiogenic stable isotope geochemistry from ETH Zurich, Switzerland, in 1997. His research has included studying the stability of municipal waste glass in France and compiling isotope data from past oceans. Between 2002 and 2006, he taught geochemistry at James Cook University in Australia, where his group focused on sediment transport in the Burdekin River catchment and its effects on the Great Barrier Reef. Since joining University College London (UCL) in 2008, he has primarily worked on ancient Earth systems and has held visiting positions in Germany and China. His recent research concentrates on the causes of climatic carbon cycle perturbations throughout Earth's history, with a particular focus on the often-overlooked sulfur cycle.
