Biography

Graham Williams became Professor of Endocrinology at Imperial College London in 2005. He obtained his BSc in Anatomy and MBBS from St. Thomas's Hospital, University of London, followed by a PhD from the University of Birmingham and a DSc from Imperial College London. He trained as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellow at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA, and received training as a Clinician Scientist Fellow from the Medical Research Council at the University of Birmingham. He was appointed Senior Lecturer at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London in 1995, and received the MRC Career Establishment Award. He was promoted to Reader in 2000 and then to Professor in 2005. Professor Williams is the head of the Molecular Endocrinology Laboratory in the Department of Metabolism, Digestion, and Reproduction at Hammersmith Campus. His research focuses on the genetic origins of bone and cartilage disease and the molecular mechanisms of thyroid hormone action in skeletal development, adult bone maintenance, and tissue repair. His laboratory is internationally recognized and generously funded by the Wellcome Trust, MRC, and the European Commission. He has been invited to speak at numerous international scientific meetings and has a wide collaborative network across the UK, Europe, USA, and Asia. His accomplishments include multiple awards for research excellence and he has served in leadership roles in several prestigious organizations, including as President of the European Thyroid Association and Society for Endocrinology. In 2023, he was appointed OBE for his services to endocrinology.
