Biography

Greg Beitel is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at Northwestern University. He earned his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1994. His research focuses on using molecular and genetic approaches in Drosophila to investigate two main areas: the mechanisms by which individual cells control their shapes and coordinate with other cells to create complex epithelial tubular networks found in multicellular organisms; and the understanding of how non-neuronal cells sense and respond to elevated levels of carbon dioxide (hypercapnia), a condition that affects patients with obstructive diseases. His work has identified conserved genes that mediate hypercapnic suppression of innate immune responses in both flies and mammals. Over his career, he has published several significant papers in esteemed journals, contributing to the understanding of epithelial morphogenesis and cellular responses to environmental stressors.
