Dr. Greg Beroza

Biography

Greg Beroza is the Wayne Loel Professor of Earth Sciences at Stanford University. His research focuses on analyzing seismograms to understand earthquakes and quantify the hazards they present. He leads a research group that studies earthquake source processes across a variety of contexts, including shallow and intermediate-depth earthquakes, as well as slow and induced earthquakes. Beroza has developed methodologies to improve earthquake monitoring by applying data mining and machine learning techniques to vast datasets of continuous seismic waveform data. His notable work in using ambient seismic fields to anticipate shaking strength during earthquakes has propelled advancements in seismic imaging and prediction capabilities. Throughout his career, he has also served in several leadership roles, including Co-Director of the Southern California Earthquake Center and President of the AGU Seismology Section. He has made significant contributions to educational initiatives in geophysics, teaching undergraduates and graduates in seismology and related fields.
