Biography

Greg Stuart has made seminal contributions to the understanding of information processed by individual nerve cells in the brain. He developed and implemented techniques for making electrical recordings from the fine processes of nerve cells called dendrites. These techniques, used globally, have led to significant discoveries describing the initiation and spread of nerve impulses in different types of nerve cells. Stuart is regarded as a world expert in the physiology of dendrites and has co-edited a book exclusively devoted to the subject. He completed his BSc (Hons) in Physiology at Monash University and obtained his PhD in Neuroscience from the Australian National University (ANU). He spent five years at the Max Planck Institute of Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany, working with the department of Nobel Laureate Bert Sakmann. After returning to ANU, Stuart established his own research program and served as head of the neuroscience department at the John Curtin School of Medical Research from 2005 to 2012, and as head of the Eccles Institute of Neuroscience from 2012 to 2021. In 2012, he was appointed a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in recognition of his landmark contributions to the neuroscience field. He moved to the Department of Physiology at Monash University in late April 2022.
