Gregorio Valdez is the Nancy Kaplan Professor at Brown University in the Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Lehman College in 1996 and completed his Ph.D. at Stony Brook University in 2005. Following his doctoral studies, he conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard University under the guidance of Dr. Joshua Sanes. In 2012, he joined Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) as an Assistant Professor and was later promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2018. Valdez moved to Brown University in 2019 to further his research in translational neuroscience. His work focuses on identifying molecules that help preserve and restore the function of the nervous system and skeletal muscles, especially in the context of normal aging and age-related diseases. He has made significant contributions to understanding the degeneration of synapses at the neuromuscular junction and co-discovered critical molecules involved in synapse formation and maintenance in the brain. Valdez’s ongoing research employs a range of techniques to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying age-related neuromuscular degeneration and has important implications for treating conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Alzheimer's disease.
