Gregory C. Fu is the Norman Chandler Professor of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology. He holds a B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, awarded in 1985, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University, completed in 1991. His research focuses on catalysis, particularly enantioselective synthesis and mechanistic studies in organic and organometallic chemistry. His group is known for developing nickel-catalyzed carbon–carbon bond-forming reactions and exploring copper-catalyzed carbon–heteroatom bond-forming reactions. Notably, Fu's research includes significant mechanistic investigations that support the development of reaction methodologies. He has held positions such as Altair Professor from 2012 to 2016, before becoming the Norman Chandler Professor. Fu has taught various courses, including Intermediate Organic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry Tutorials, aimed mostly at graduate students seeking a solid foundation in organic chemistry.
Most Caltech graduate programs are PhD-only. GRE General and Subject tests vary by department; many have made them optional or no longer accept them.
