Biography

Gregory D Funk is the Chair of the Department of Physiology and Associate Dean of Research at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. His research focuses on the mechanisms of neuronal information processing within respiratory networks, which are critical for producing a reliable and dynamic breathing rhythm. He has made significant contributions to understanding how astrocytes and the neurotransmitter ATP play roles in adaptive breathing responses to hypoxia, as well as the mechanisms involved in the modulation of respiratory patterns during the sleep-wake cycle. His laboratory employs a variety of techniques, including electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and optogenetics, to explore these complex interactions within the central nervous system. He is affiliated with both the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute and the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute.
