Dr. Gregory Hirsch

Biography

Greg Hirsch, M.D., FRCS-C is a Professor in the Division of Cardiac Surgery at Dalhousie University. He graduated from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1984 and completed General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery training at Massachusetts General Hospital between 1992 and 1995. His fellowship in vascular biology was completed at the Morris Karnovsky Harvard Medical School Department of Pathology from 1987 to 1990. Since joining Dalhousie University and Victoria General Hospital in Halifax in 1995, he has focused on clinical practice and research interests, particularly in mitral valve repair. His research career has centered on translational and basic science related to pathobiology, transplant, atherosclerosis, and health policy outcomes. For the past decade, Dr. Hirsch has concentrated on the outcomes of older patients living with frailty who undergo cardiac surgery and has been involved in shared decision-making processes. He also served as the Divisional Head of Cardiac Surgery from 2005 to 2018 and as the Provincial Director of the Perioperative Network at Nova Scotia Health. Additionally, he leads the National Surgery Quality Improvement Programme in the province and is working to establish a central intake system for booking surgical patients.
