Biography

Gregory Knapp is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geography at the University of Texas at Austin. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics/Economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Wisconsin. He joined the University of Texas faculty in 1984 after teaching at the University of Minnesota. His research encompasses cultural regional geography with a focus on adaptive dynamics in agriculture and ethnic territoriality mapping in Latin America, particularly the Andean region. He has conducted significant studies on the impacts of climate change on Andean agriculture, advocating for policies that empower local actors. Throughout his career, he supervised numerous graduate students and contributed to the field through publications and edited volumes on various themes, including modernization and cultural ecology. Even after retirement, Knapp continues his research from Davis, California, teaching related topics at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC Davis.
