Biography

Appointed Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba in 1974, Dr. Gregory Mason has had a distinguished career focusing on economics with various specializations. His research interests initially included transportation, housing, and land use planning, but transitioned in 1981 when he became the Director of the Institute of Social and Economic Research. This role drew him into a 35-year program of research regarding the economics of poverty, particularly through the evaluation of basic income initiatives such as the Manitoba Basic Income Experiment (Mincome). In 1988, he moved to a tenured reduced appointment to establish Prairie Research Associates (PRA) Inc., one of Canada's leading program evaluation and social research firms. After retiring as Managing Partner in 2015, he continued his work as a Senior Consultant. His current research interests involve health economics and the impacts of basic income, alongside his longstanding passion for land economics. Dr. Mason has also served as an advisor to the Ontario government on the Basic Income Pilot, further contributing to the discourse on social welfare.
