Biography

Gregory Lee Newsome is a composer and Associate Professor in the Teaching Stream for Music Technology and the Digital Media program at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music. His work, described as 'beautifully wrought,' reflects an intricate and hypnotic web of sound, texture, and rhythm. With a foundation in spectralism, his artistic practice emphasizes computation, integrating computer-assisted composition and interactive performance with reactive video. After earning a Master of Music in Composition from the University of British Columbia, he furthered his studies with the renowned Russian-Canadian composer Nikolai Korndorf and the iconic Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho in Paris. Gregory has written music for various ensembles and his compositions have been performed and broadcast across North America and Europe. He is also a committed advocate for contemporary music, serving as a director for Aventa and the Music Gallery, hosting the radio program 'Serious? Music,' and acting as the Artistic Advisor for ensemble1534.
