Gregory Rohrer is a W.W. Mullins Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, having joined the faculty in 1990. He received his bachelor’s degree in Physics from Franklin & Marshall College and completed his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. His research focuses on quantifying the atomic, nano, and microstructural mechanisms that govern high-temperature deformation of materials. Rohrer is also the coordinating editor for Acta Materialia and has served in significant roles such as the chair of the University Materials Council and a director on the board of the American Ceramic Society. His contributions to the field have earned him recognition as a Fellow of the Materials Research Society (MRS) and the upcoming Cyril Stanley Smith Award from TMS in 2025. Furthermore, Rohrer has played an active role in outreach programs aimed at engaging younger students in materials science.
