Dr. Gregory Scott

Biography

Gregory Scott is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester specializing in Chinese Culture and History. He completed his PhD in Chinese Buddhism at Columbia University in 2013, following an undergraduate and master's education at York University and the University of Toronto. Scott has also been a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh, where he held a three-year Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship in the Asian Studies department. Since joining the University of Manchester in September 2017, he has been actively involved in various scholarly activities, including serving as a council member of the British Association for Chinese Studies and co-editing China Book Reviews. Scott's research primarily focuses on the history and culture of China, particularly religion between the 1860s and 1960s, and his published works examine Buddhism in China, with a specific emphasis on print culture. He has also collaborated with international institutions and held roles as a visiting scholar and workshop participant at respected organizations such as Academia Sinica and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science.
